Web Content Management
The Office of Communications and Marketing is responsible for the CCNY web site, with over 40,000 pages and over 200 web editors working within our content management system. All school, division, office and department subsites on the College website are developed by this office and then turned over to the content owners. These editors are then able to work on their own sites by themselves, without any programming or coding necessary in order to update their content.
The process of building a site within the CMS (called CommonSpot) begins with a consultation with content owners to assess their needs - the owners provide the actual content for these sites. Working with content owners, our office refines the information architecture and usability of content submissions. Standard CCNY-branded web templates are used to build the individual pages of the site. Then, we train users to maintain their sections of the website so that they can keep them current and relevant.
Some of the Benefits of the CMS
- No software to learn or download - you edit content directly into the web interface
- No programming/coding knowledge necessary to update content - if you can compose an email, you can work in the CMS
