Prof. Gerardo Vildostegui from Camden Law School--Puerto Rico and Political Philosophy. The debate over what Puerto Rico's political relationship with the United States ought to be—over the so called "status question"--is one of the most intellectually interesting and emotionally difficult debates in contemporary U.S. politics. I argue that this particular controversy, in all its messy particularity, is a fitting subject for political philosophy, and I develop a methodology, based on the close examination of points of consensus, by which political philosophy might contribute to its resolution. I also argue that an examination of the Puerto Rican status question yields a dividend for those interested in more abstract philosophical questions; it provides new reasons to reject a purely individualistic moral ontology.
