Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Secretary General of NATO:
"Why NATO Matters for You"
Anders Fogh Rasmussen, secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a union of 26 European nations and the U.S. and Canada, joined CCNY President Lisa S. Coico in conversation to address how NATO is managing emerging security challenges and contributing to global security.
On Thursday, September 27, the Colin Powell Center and the CCNY Division of Social Sciences hosted the secretary general of NATO, Anders Fogh Rasmussen to address
NATO's evolving role. Addressing a full audience in the Great Hall of Shepard Hall, Mr. Rasmussen answered questions from CCNY students and others on subjects ranging from whether NATO should intervene in Libya to its role in Afghanistan and the continued relevance of the organization.
Prior to his talk, the secretary general met in a small group with Colin Powell leadership fellows. One fellow, Samuel Innocent, noted afterward, that Mr. Rasmussen was very direct and wiling to answer questions that other diplomats might avoid. "He welcomed a large range of question and gave in depth detailed answers and i truly admired that about him," Innocent added. "Knowing that he has a busy schedule with the UN conveining made the experience that much more desirable. Overall it was a good experience that gave me insight as to how NATO operates and where it stands on key issues, an experience that i will reflect on when i push forward in my goals."
