Glen Milstein, CBPR Faculty FellowThe Colin Powell Center supports community-based participatory research (CBPR) at CCNY. CBPR is a collaborative approach to research that involves all partners—community, academic, policymakers—equitably in all aspects of the research process. To do this, we provide faculty and their community partners with CBPR grants, technical assistance, and training. We also help researchers to form partnerships with community organizations and assist research teams to develop successful CBPR experiences.

The Powell Center’s CBPR Grant Program encourages academic and community partners to “...transform research from a relationship where researchers act upon a community to answer a research question to one where researchers work side by side with community members to define the question and methods, implement the research, disseminate the findings, and apply them. Community members become part of the research team and researchers become part of the community” (from Developing and Sustaining Community-Based Participatory Research Partnerships: A Skill-Building Curriculum. 2006. www.cbprcurriculum.info.).

Funding from the Center
Given the labor- and time-intensive nature of CBPR, the Center provides funding for two separate phases of the CBPR process. Applicants must complete contractual requirements of Phase I before applying for Phase II funding. Phase I includes a Stage 1 and Stage 2. For Phase 1, "Developing Partnerships and Choosing Research Priorities," applicants can apply to receive up to $4,000 to support professional development for research teams, partnership development, planning, and capacity building of key partners. Granteess for Phase II, "Research Design, Implementation and Dissemination," can apply to receive an additional $4,000 to support research design, formative data collection, piloting of measurements and instruments, data analysis, intervention design and dissemination.
