Professor Darwin Deen of the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education announces the faculty honorees for the 2012 Service-Learning Recognition Ceremony. funding Opportunities for Faculty and Departments

Service-Learning Faculty Fellowships of up to $5,000 are now available for CCNY faculty. The deadline to apply for a 2012 Service-Learning Fellowship is August 1, 2011. The fellowship program provides financial support and professional development to enable faculty to integrate service-learning into new or existing courses. Service-learning is an innovative teaching method that integrates meaningful community service opportunities into a student's coursework. President Lisa S. Coico encourages CCNY faculty to partner with the Colin Powell Center to integrate this pedagogy into new or existing courses. Faculty members from any department or school at City College may apply.

The Center's goal is to provide every City College student with the opportunity to experience service-learning, and, in the process, to develop leadership skills, professional networks, and a deeper understanding of community needs and resources. Service-learning experiences can ignite student learning, help students effectively prepare for careers, and positively contribute to local communities. Research studies demonstrate that service-learning also has a significant positive impact on faculty-student interaction, and student retention.
