Korean Issues and Insights: Spring 2013 Events
This semester, the Colin Powell Center hosts area scholars and filmmakers offering their views and research into contemporary Korea and Korean-American relations. Our Korean Issue and Insights Program, made possible through a grant from the Korea Foundation, will present guest lectures, as well as a film screening with a panel discussion to follow. All events are free and open to the public.
March 14: "the people's crisis" film screening and panel discussion
Liberty in North Korea will screen their film "The People's Crisis," a 50-minute documentary that examines the hunger, poverty, and the lack of even basic human rights in North Korea. After the screening, a panel of journalists, policy experts, and scholars will discuss the film and participate in a Q&A with the audience.

Moderator: Stephen Noerper, Senior Vice President, The Korea Society. Dr. Noerper is an East Asia and Eurasia specialist who has served with the U.S. State Department, Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies, the Nautilus Institute for Security and Sustainable Development, and other posts for more than two decades.
Panelists: Kathryn Weathersby, Korea Studies Visiting Scholar, U.S.-Korea Institute at SAIS, Wash., D.C. Dr. Weathersby is former Senior Associate and Coordinator of the Korea Initiative of the History and Public Policy Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. She is author of The North Korean Enigma: Back to the Future?
Representatives of Liberty in North Korea (LINK): Liberty in North Korea (LiNK) is the only full-time grassroots organization in North America devoted to the North Korean human rights and humanitarian crises. LiNK Representatives (“Nomads”) include
- Greg Meyer - Meyer studied international business at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. He became interested in this issue after spending a year teaching English in South Korea and reading the book Escape From North Korea: Asia's Underground Railroad.
- Meera Kaushik - Kaushik is studying economics and international relations at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. She got involved with LiNK after watching a video about the organization’s SHIFT campaign.
- Eunice Kwon - A graduate from California State University-Fresno, Kwon is bringing her marketing background to the road as a LiNK Nomad. Traveling around the northeastern US and Canada this spring shifting the perception on North Korea from the politics to the people, Eunice runs the social media for the Northeast Nomads.
April 3: the korean wave
Professor Jung-bong Choi, New York University, will talk about the Korean Wave, or hallyu, the global spread of South Korean pop culture. Professor Choi will explore how and why Korean pop culture has become a global phenomenon in the 21st century. The lecture will be held in NAC, room 6/114, from 7:15 to 9:45 P.M.
