The Colin Powell Center announces the inauguration of its first annual “Conversations in Leadership” series at the City College of New York. Our program brings together experienced policymakers and opinion leaders from all levels of politics—local, state, national and federal—to discuss their substantive areas of expertise, their experiences working in and studying the public sector, and the lessons they have learned about effective leadership with the City College community.

The Center is honored to welcome its second featured guest this semester, R. L'Heureux Lewis, assistant professor of sociology and Black studies at the City College of New York, on March 20. (See below for details.) Dr. Lewis’ research concentrates on issues of educational inequality, the role of race in contemporary society, and gender equity. His commentary and analysis have been featured in national and regional media outlets such as the Detroit Free Press, National Public Radio, Diversity in Higher Education, Fox News, KeepHope Alive Radio with Jesse Jackson, Ebony.com, TheGrio.com, TheRoot.com, and US World News Report. In addition, Dr. Lewis maintains an award-winning weblog, Uptown Notes. He holds a Ph.D. in public policy and sociology from the University of Michigan and a B.A. in sociology from Morehouse College.

The Center's other guests this semester are former New York State Governor Eliot Spitzer; Commissioner Fatima Shama of the New York City Mayor's Office for Immigrant Affairs; and Jeffrey Laurenti, senior fellow at the Century Foundation.

The conversation with Professor Lewis will take place on Tuesday, March 20 from 12:30-1:45 at the Colin L. Powell Center for Leadership and Service (Shepard Hall, Room 558) on the campus of the City College of New York. RSVPs are required.
