On Wednesday, March 30, the Powell Center-led New York Metro Area Partnership for Service-Learning (NYMAPS) will present its fourth annual symposium, "Ethics in Service-Learning: Best Practices for Empowering Community Partners and Educating Students." The event, hosted by St. John's University, will take place on its lower Manhattan campus from noon to 5 p.m., and will focus on issues of identity and diversity in service relationships and on equitable campus-community partnerships.
The symposium will feature Tania Mitchell as keynote speaker. Mitchell is associate director of undergraduate studies and director of service-learning at Stanford University's Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity. Additionally, in six afternoon workshops, service-learning practitioners, community partners, and students will explore best practices for service-learning that support "just relationships" The workshops will feature innovative collaborations throughout the region, such as one between service-learners at St. John's and the nonprofit organization City Harvest around food justice issues and a project that brings freshman into the International YMCA's New Americans initiative.
