Colin Powell Fellow, 2012-2014

Chukwudubem (Dubem) Okeke, the son of Nigerian immigrants, is a third year biomedical science major at the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education with dreams of pursuing a career in primary care medicine. In high school, he served in a peer leadership program directly involved in community outreach services such as building homes for the homeless, cystic fibrosis and cancer awareness, serving in soup kitchens, sex and drug education, and mentoring students with special needs. Dubem works with the In Arms Reach Program, mentoring children whose parents have been incarcerated. He feels that the greatest part of being a primary care physician is the opportunity to build lasting relationships with patients and inspire a welcoming and trusting environment in the hospital. He hopes to continue his mentorship of younger children and to bring positive change to underprivileged areas, while building stronger patient-physician relations that will benefit the public health in the long-term.
