Shantanu Roy
Dobrich New Americans Scholar, 2012-2014
A native of Bangladesh, Shantanu Roy is an international studies major and history minor. He came to the United States six years ago, and in 2006 was enrolled at Newcomers High School. There he had the opportunity to integrate himself into a highly diverse environment with students from around the globe, an experience that, he says, helped him to visualize the world from different perspectives. Shantanu has participated in extra-curricular activities with organizations such as Global Kids and the International YMCA, helping him to build leaderships skills and opening doors to his joining a service-learning trip to Colombia and participating in the Global Climate Summit 2009 at the United Nations. These experiences have provided him with a better understanding of and ability to address policy concerns. Therefore, he hopes to pursue a career in the Office of Public Diplomacy, and to be active inside policymaking circles, so that he can communicate to the public how policies affect their everyday lives.
