Hector Velez
Colin Powell Fellow, 2011-2013
A third-year student at the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education with a minor in philosophy, Hector Velez plans to work as a family physician. Hector was born in Washington Heights and graduated from Central Islip High School in Suffolk County, Long Island. Of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent, Hector was the founder and first president of the City College Chapter of the Latino Medical Student Association, a student organization that advocates for the increased awareness towards health disparities prevalent in the Hispanic Latino community in all aspects of medicine. (This includes access to medical care and low rates of practicing Hispanic-Latino medical professionals.) Hector’s academic interests include biomedical ethics with a focus in the ethics of public health policy. As a physician, Hector hopes not only to provide medical services to those who need it most, but also to lobby actively on behalf of the “invisible” population of undocumented immigrants in dire need of primary health-care services.
