Physics Colloquium and Semat Lecture: Roman Jackiw; "Fractional charge and Majorana excitations: The physics of zero-energy modes."
Roman Jackiw is the Jerold Zacharias Professor of Physics at MIT.
ABSTRACT: Dirac paid close attention to the energy spectrum of the solutions to his equation, viz. the unwanted negative-energy states, and he developed a physical interpretation for them as oppositely charged anti-particles. Recently discussed and physically motivated deformations of the Dirac equation exhibit further unexpected states in the energy spectrum, viz. isolated zero-energy modes. We present a physical interpretation for these states as fermionic excitations carrying fractional charge, or no charge at all and they become Majorana fermions.
