Overview of Emergency Financial Aid at CCNY

CCNY operates several emergency loan and grant programs for currently enrolled students who have paid their current semester's tuition bill and are not in debt to the College. Visiting and non-degree students are not eligible. Applications for grants and loans will only be processed when classes are in session.

Student Support Resources Emergency Grant Program

There are two available funds used for the Student Support Resources Emergency Grants: Dreamkeepers and Petrie. Students may only apply for one of the grants. The eligibility requirements are the same for both.


If awarded, the student may only receive ONE emergency grant within a two-year period.


Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible to apply for the Student Affairs Emergency Grant, students must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Students must be matriculated at the City College of New York
  • Undergraduate students must have a minimum GPA of 2.00
  • Graduate students must have a minimum GPA of 3.00
  • Transfer students must have had good academic standing at their previous college
  • Students must have a record of good conduct
  • Students must have paid tuition to the City College of New York for the current semester
  • Students must have a current and unexpected emergency need.

Emergency Situations and Eligible Expenses

Students experiencing a current and unforeseen emergency may apply for the grant. You will be required to submit a statement of need explaining your situation and how you will use the funds, if awarded. The following are examples of eligible emergency situations and expenses. Please be advised that decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

  • Overdue utilities bills and shut-off notices
  • Rent in arrears, at risk for eviction
  • Housing assistance for homelessness
  • Medical and dental bills for uninsured necessary procedures
  • Destruction of living quarters, due to fire or other natural disaster
  • Theft of computer, books, clothing or other essential belongings
  • Assistance in paying for food, transportation and basic necessities due to recent unemployment or recent financial difficulty
  • Automobile expenses (if your car breaks down and is your only means of transportation)
  • Child care for legal dependents
  • Travel home for illness or death in the immediate family

Ineligible Expenses

Please note that funds will NOT be awarded for the following purposes:

  • Cell phone, credit card, or cable/Internet bills
  • Car notes or mortgage payments
  • Payments for rent or utilities not overdue
  • Full or partial tuition costs
  • Previous debts to CCNY
  • Costs related to housing in a CCNY facility
  • Tobacco, alcohol, or any entertainment expenses
  • Payment of fines or fees incurred from parking or traffic violations
  • Legal representation in a criminal proceeding or CCNY disciplinary proceeding

The Application Process


How to Apply for an Emergency Grant

  1. Fill out an application: visit http://ccny.dreamkeepers.org to apply online or come to the Office of Student Affairs to receive an application. Application must be completed by the CCNY student only. You may also come to the Office of Student Affairs if you require further assistance to complete your application.
  2. Statement of Need: Include a brief statement (1-page, typed, & dated) explaining your emergency and describing how the funds will be used. Itemize each cost and provide a total of the requested amount. You MUST provide documentation for each itemized cost. (See next step)
  3. Supporting Documentation: For each itemized cost listed in your statement of need, you must submit a supporting document. Provide as much evidentiary documentation as possible in order to support your request for an emergency grant. (See below)
Applications will not be given consideration unless they are complete and include both a statement of need and any supporting document(s).

Supporting Documentation

If your documents do not meet the following requirements, they will not be included in your application. Your documents be...

  • Current and up-to-date (we do not accept any documents or bills from more than 1 month prior to your request)
  • Addressed to you or are in your name (if they are not, you must provide additional documentation)
  • On professional business letterhead (if you are submitting a letter)
  • Must be typed and dated (no handwritten notes)

Submitting your documents

You may upload the documents (PDFs only) and email them to counseling@ccny.cuny.edu (or upload them to the Dreamkeepers website, if applying to Dreamkeepers), fax them to 212-650-7080 (please call the office at 212-650-5426 to confirm receipt) or bring them in person to the Student Support Resources, Marshak Science Building, Room J-15.

Unacceptable Documentation

  • Rent statements and utility bills that are not addressed to or in the name of the CCNY student applicant
  • Rent and utilities bills not overdue
  • Statements of need written by someone other than the CCNY student applying for the grant
  • Handwritten statements, letters, or notes
  • Letters not on professional business letterhead
  • Bills or statements that are dated more than 1 month prior to your request

If your application or documents do not meet the above requirements, your application will not be considered.

Submitting your Application & Award Information

After Submitting Your Application

  1. Your application will be reviewed by Student Support Resources staff to ensure your eligibility. You will be contacted if your application requires further explanation or additional documents. Please keep in mind that your application will not be considered complete unless it has all appropriate documentation.
  2. Your name will be submitted to the Office of Financial Aid to determine your "remaining need" (amount after all financial aid and scholarships)
  3. The Emergency Grant Administrator will make a final decision on your application
  4. When your emergency grant check is ready for you to pick up, the Office of Student Affairs will contact you by phone. Please do not call or come to the office unless you have already been contacted.

Dreamkeepers

A Program of Scholarship America

The Dreamkeepers Emergency Financial Assistance program provides assistance to students at risk of dropping out of College due to unexpected financial emergencies.  Dreamkeepers assistance was created to help students stay in college and meet their educational goals, ultimately securing a better financial future. 

Eligible students must create an account and upload supporting documentation. To apply online, please visit http://ccny.dreamkeepers.org. If you need additional information, please contact Student Support Resources at (212) 650-8222.

The Carroll and Milton Petrie Foundation
Student Emergency Fund
The Carroll and Milton Petrie Student Emergency Endowment Fund has been created for the purpose of providing emergency cash grants to students in good standing with short-term financial emergencies to enable them to remain in school, rather than being forced to take a leave of absence or drop out.

International students are encouraged to apply for the Petrie Grant.

The maximum award amount is $1,500. You must provide verifiable documentation supporting any extraordinary circumstances. Only ONE emergency grant will be awarded within a two-year period.

 

Richter Loans

Fall 2011  Loan Guidelines


Administered by Student Support Resources, the Richter Tuition Loan is available to help qualify students complete current semesters tuition bill payment. The maximum tuition loan is $500. No cash is disbursed, but students must sign a loan form that must be presented to the Bursar's Office by the payment deadline. The repayment deadline for this loan is due at the time of registration for the following semester. The College reserves the right to place a stop on a student record prior to the re-payment deadline date. To qualify, students must meet the following criteria*:


1. Be matriculated (accepted in a degree-granting program). Visiting and non-degree students are not eligible.
2. Undergraduate students must have a minimum GPA of 2.00.
3. Graduate students must have a minimum GPA of 3.00.
4. Must not be in default of any government issued student loan(s).
5. Have no current debt to the College.
6. Present proof of financial aid eligibility or proof of tuition aid from other sources if a new student to the College.
