Teaching Fellows

Information for Teaching Fellows!

We wanted to add some information to this page that you can use as a resource as you continue to navigate the program.  If any questions arise, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the CCNY Teaching Fellows office at ccnyteachingfellows@gmail.com.

Announcements

At this point in the semester, if you choose to withdraw from a course, your transcript will reflect a grade of W, and the DOE will be charged the full amount of the course. You have until April 16 to drop a class with a grade of W. You may choose to take advantage of this option if you find that you may not be able to pass a course for some reason. Please consider talking to your professor and/or advisor about withdrawing from a course if you think you may be interested in this option.

Initial Certification

We strongly recommend that all teaching fellows take and pass all exams required for initial certification before graduation.  Upon your graduation from the program, your Transitional B license will be revoked, and you will need your Initial Certification in place before you're allowed to teach in a DOE school.  You can only receive your Initial Certification once you've passed all exams, applied for your Initial Certificate(s), AND paid the $50 (or $100 for those who must apply for the bilingual extension) application fee(s).

The exams required for Initial Certification are as follows (please note: the requirements below are IN ADDITION to the tests you had to pass for your Transitional B, the EAS, the ALST, and the CST multi-subject):

  • To be recommended for Initial Certification in Childhood Education WITH a Bilingual Extension, you must pass the following exams:
    • edTPA (content area: elementary education)
    • Bilingual Education Assessment (BEA)
You will receive support services for the edTPA in the Fall of 2015.  We will be in touch as details surrounding this emerge.
  • For all SPED 7-12 fellows (including the bilingual extension fellows), you will need to pass the following tests before you will be granted Initial Certification:
    • edTPA (Special Ed)
    • CST for Students with Disabilities
    • The NEW CST multi-subject for grades 7-12.
    • Bilingual Education Assessment (BEA) - BILINGUAL EXTENSION FELLOWS ONLY
You will receive support services for the edTPA in the Fall of 2015 when you take SPED 3901K.
  • For all SPED 7-12 fellows (including the bilingual extension fellows), most of you have taken and passed the OLD CST multi-subject.  This old test will allow you to keep your Transitional B certification.  It will not, however, be accepted when you go to apply for initial certification.  For initial certification, you will have to pass the NEW CST multi-subject for grades 7-12.

Probation

A student will be placed on probation if the grade point average falls below 3.0. The student may be removed from probation when the G.P.A. reaches 3.0.

Dismissal

A student will be dismissed if the G.P.A. remains below 3.0 for two semesters. Students may appeal their dismissal to the committee on Course and Standing.
