Position Description and Duties

GENERAL DUTIES

The Dean, reporting to senior executive management, oversees a school, division, academic program and/or function to enhance its profile, visibility, and effectiveness. He/she develops long- and short-range plans, and exercises management responsibility for academic program planning, faculty matters, and administration, including staffing, budgets, and facilities. He/she fosters a high-quality environment of academic teaching, research, and intellectual achievement, and creates and strengthens partnerships within and outside the College as a strong advocate.

CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Reporting to the President, the Dean of Diversity & Compliance and Special Assistant to the President for Faculty Relations carries responsibility for campus diversity, compliance, and faculty professional development initiatives on campus.

The City College of New York has approximately 600 full-time faculty members and over 1,000 part time faculty members.

In addition to the duties above the Dean:
- Oversees the performance evaluation process for faculty personnel.
- Develops faculty mentoring initiatives and collaborate with the President's office to administer faculty professional development awards.
- Collaborates with key areas on campus in both diversity issues and complex faculty related issues and/or grievances.
- Oversees the implementation of the City University of New York's Affirmative Action Policy and is responsible for the Office of Diversity & Compliance, as well as the creation of diversity and compliance programs, activities and initiatives designed to foster a climate that encourages respect for diversity.
- Oversees search committees in the implementation of Affirmative Action program regulations, directs search committees regarding recruitment efforts for a diverse faculty and staff, interprets information on under-utilization for relevant constituencies, reviews recruitment documentation, and monitors employee recruitment and selection to ensure compliance with EEO/AAP policies and plan.
- Serves on the Inclusive Excellence College Committee and be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Council's recommendations.
- Represents the President at various committees and programs addressing issues of compliance, diversity and minority representation in The City College and CUNY communities.
- Oversees the investigation of discrimination complaints (including race, ethnicity, and gender) and ensures the College is in compliance with all laws, rules and regulations including but not limited to Title VII, ADA, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Title IV, and Title IX.
- Develops and administers training programs and curriculum to address issues such as sexual harassment, violence in the workplace, embracing diversity, engaging employees and students with disabilities and retaining City College's best employees and consults with College executives on further training needs of their faculty and staff.
- Collaborates with student groups to address diversity issues on campus, and is responsible for investigating employee complaints involving alleged discrimination based on protected status.
- Serves as a Special Assistant to the President for Faculty Relations, overseeing the design and implementation of initiatives leading to new policies, procedures, and programs with college-wide impact that address external and internal issues.
- Handles matters of the greatest confidentiality, working with the President and College executives as well as with other key individuals, and provides confidential support and guidance to the President and other senior staff.
- Represents the President and serves as a liaison to various multi-cultural institutions and organizations, civic, community and charitable organizations, academic and professional organizations, and special interest groups as well as federal, state and municipal government agencies and instrumentalities.

Qualifications and Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below by the College.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

The candidate must have a terminal degree in an academic discipline, a JD or equivalent. Should have experience working with faculty in a union environment and experience in an academic setting. Higher education experience essential with experience in a large public institution highly desirable. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, both oral and written, as well as excellent judgment and a record of effectiveness in dealing with conflict resolution.
