VOICE OF REASON
BY ELENA ROMERO
Originally from Baltimore, Maryland, Samantha Johnston took a 10-year break from her college education to tour North America as a performing rock ‘n’ roll musician. Upon moving to New York City two years ago, she decided to give school another try. “I craved for academic stimulation and decided to find a program through which I could rejuvenate my intellectual creativity,” says Samantha, who records voiceovers for educational software companies, phone answering systems, animation, radio and TV commercials, along with singing an occasional jingle. “I wanted to continue learning and finish my degree. CWE fit the bill perfectly.” A voiceover actress, Samantha, became aware of CWE through a Google search. “The school popped up during a search for credit for life experience,” she says. “I attended the orientation and loved what I heard about the Autobiography seminar. I registered on the spot.”
According to Samantha, who had previously attended Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, and the Anne Arundel Community College in Arnold, Maryland, her experience at CWE has been extremely rewarding. “Being at CWE is a non-stop, mind-expansion marathon,” she explains. “With every semester, I feel like I understand the world better and my place in it.”
Attending CWE since spring ’05, Johnston has had the opportunity to read fascinating books like The Odyssey, expanded her critical thinking abilities and improved her writing skills. “CWE beautifully accommodates the needs of working adults—evening classes, four credits, once a week, with a rigorous academic and uncompromising education.”
For Samantha, like the other 750 students at CWE, “This is no diploma mill. You have to want to be here-the curriculum is demanding as it is rewarding.“
