Founded in the 11th century, Logroño is a dynamic city in northwest Spain. It is the capital city of the autonomous community of La Rioja, Spain’s wine country, birthplace of the Spanish Language, and the site of many important medieval structures and an important resting point in the Camino de Santiago.
Universidad de La Rioja summer courses are programed according to students’ and groups’ specific requirements. Methodology is based on communication skills development bearing in mind different aspects to obtain a deep knowledge of the Spanish Language and Culture.
The courses consist of 20 lessons per week (80 hours in total) taking place in the morning, plus different cultural activities and trips to different places in Logroño and its surroundings.
Students must chose one of three tracks:
- Track 1 (6 credits): Intermediate Spanish (SPAN 225; 3 credits) & Spanish Culture (SPAN 31002; 3 credits)
- Track 2 (6 credits, taught in Spanish): Two 3-credit electives taught in Spanish on literature, film and art history.
- Track 3 (3 credits, taught in English): Film, Memory, and the Legacy of the Spanish Civil War, taught by CCNY Professor Andrea Weiss. This course investigates the Spanish Civil War through its representation in fiction and nonfiction films. The course starts by contextualizing the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) within the 1930s Age of Extremes. It proceeds to study the role played by film in memorializing the civil war, up to and including the contemporary movement for the recovery of historical memory. Extra 3-credit independent study in film available with permission.
Complementary activities
Throughout the academic program, a wide range of culture and leisure activities are offered, all included in the program cost:
- Guided city tour in Logroño
- Visit to San Millán de La Cogolla Monastery (UNESCO World Heritage Site where phrases in the Spanish Language were written for the first time)
- Visit to Museo de la Cultura del Vino Dinastía Vivanco
- Visit to a Rioja’s winery
- Wine tasting
- Gastronomic sessions
Orientations
There will be a pre-departure orientation during the Spring 2013 semester.
Ground Transportation
Students will be picked up at Madrid Airport and will be taken to The Riviera Residence in Logroño (about 5 hours) and back to Madrid when the program is completed.
Costs for Tracks 1 & 2
CCNY Tuition for 6 credits
Program cost: $920.00
Included: accommodations in students dormitories (on the Ebro River Park, three blocks from school, and near a large shopping center), excursions, transportation from/to Madrid, free wireless Internet in your room, private bathroom, towels, bed sheets provided twice a week, washer and dryer at the dorm, private or semi private in-room kitchen, kitchen utensils, telephone in the rooms, gym, local and international health insurance, free WIFI at the dorm and TV room; access to the library.
Not included: meals (you will have you a kitchen in your room) and airfare to/from Spain (approx. $1000)
